  1. Hello everyone!!

Well, about the video I think it's informative in a specific field about several aplications of Biotechnology. In this video, the central topic was about some benefits we can recieve from genetic engineering and modification of organisms.

Some examples that are covered in the video are the modification of certain bacteria by inserting human genes to produce substances of interest. Besides, they talk about correcting some disorders by adding normal genes to cells that are missing those genes or that have desregulated. Also, some farmers are now using genetically modified plants and animals for improving their production.

Also, there are mentioned dangers of modificating organisms by this tools and what goverments are doing to prevent this risk.

This video doesn´t mention some other possibilities of modificating or adding genes, like using them for obtaining models to study diferent human diseases. Also, there are other uses of Biotechnology that doesn´t involved genetical modification, for instance birremediation, development of secondary metabolites by tissue culture, tissue culture of human cells for different purposes, biocontrol of pests, between others.

  2. Hello classmates!

My opinion about the video is that Biotechnologists have been developing a lot of tools to improve the food with the use of recombinant DNA technology and to solve or correct different kinds of diseases (Hepatitis B and C, diabetes, cancer, sclerosis) with the help of the genetic therapy.

In agriculture, Biotechnology applications has been used to create crops with tolerance to biotic stress, reduce reliance on chemical pesticides and enhance the nutritional value of food. A good example of these technologies is the development of Bt cotton with the insertion of genes coding proteins that produce delta-endotoxins of the environmental bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt).

In my particular experience, the toxins or crystals produced by Bt are enough specific to travel inside the digestive apparatus of insects and recognize receptors located in the epithelium of the midgut of the target pest. The other interesting aspect with these toxins is that researchers need to select a Bt strain before they decide to develop the GMO, because the insect orders (Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Diptera, etc) have different pH level inside their alimentary canals and the Bt strains can't be activated if they don't have a neutral or alkaline pH level.

Regarding the biosafety aspect, the development of GMO has always been a controversial topic because people are not sure if these crops might produce proteins that could be dangerous for our health, and researchers cannot measure the impact of this aspect after some years that the crop is cultivated on field.

Nevertheless, if we don't want to create GMO, researchers can develop a biopesticides with the toxic proteins of Bt and supplement them with other entomotoxic proteins like protease inhibitors or lectins to synergize their activity. This product could be sprayed exogenously in leafs or fruits with a carrier (silica or vermiculite) to prevent the degradation of Bt toxins in the environment.

  3. Hi teacher and classmates!
The video, shows a general concept of biotechnology and its aplications, also, the video explains crearly the importance of biotechnology in human life. There are a lot of applications for biotechnology, for example, you can change the DNA of different bacteria, then, the bacteria will produce specific compounds that are very usefull for humans. Also, you can produce insulin for diabetics, by splicing human genes in bacteria DNA.
Biotechnology can be use in the future for correct some genetic disorders, also, it can be use in agriculture to increase crops.
Biotechnology is an aplicated science, it has different applications in many areas, for example: medicine, agriculture, enviroment, recycling, sintetic biology, industry, biocontrol...
If you practice biotechnology, you must have to be very carefull and you have to consider bioethic in any research that you do. Also, you have to focus in increasing human life without affect another kind of life.

  4. Hello classmates
The video talks about the multiple applications of biotechnology, focusing on the genetic modification of microorganisms and some macro-organisms, mainly plants such as cotton.
Biotechnology can be used in countless applications, limited only by the imagination of researchers. For example would treat and even cure various diseases from a genetic point of view (gene therapy). Besides enhancing many species of agricultural interest in feeding the growing population and decrease hunger.
Furthermore biotechnology provides the tools to solve the pollution problems caused by the excessive growth of cities and the poor management of natural resources through the use of microorganisms to treat wastes that are not properly degraded naturally

  5. The video talks about some specific issues of biotechnology. At first it is mentioned the genetic engineering, and how it can be used to insert different genes from one organism to another completely different. An example is the produce of human insulin with bacteria; the method is by splicing human genes into the DNA of certain bacteria, and the bacteria is going to be able to produce the insulin in culture, in enough amount to be use like a therapy for diabetic. Also it is mentioned the genetic therapy, the scientists hope that someday some genetic diseases will be cured by the adding of normal genes to cells that are missing genes for example. Also it is explained the benefits of genetically modified plants and animals to improve certain characteristics, for example avoid the quit softening of the fruits, like the tomato, that has been modified to resist the long ship and to be ripen on the vine without becoming soft, that improves brings benefits to the farmer like to the supermarkets.
The biotechnology has applications in to many areas, but is known four major areas and it is divided by colors.
We have the “Red biotechnology” that involves medical process, and it is uses to produces antibiotics, vacuums, molecular diagnostics, and the development of genetic engeenering throw the use of genetic manipulation.
The “Blue biotechnology” refers to aquatic and marine applications of biotechnology like the treatment of wastewater, aquiculture, etc.
The “Green biotechnology” is applied to agricultural processes. Here we have all the culture in vitro of plants, micro propagation, the transgenic plants, conservation of germplasm, etc.
The “White biotechnology” is the one applied to industrial processes, like the use of enzymes as industrial catalyst, the creation of new materials like biodegrades plastics, creation of new materials to the textile industries, the production of biofuel.
The biotechnology has to many applications and we just mentioned a little part of all the possibilities with the biotechnology, it is a powerful tool to generate and offers a lot of different solutions in to many fields and we have to keep working on different research to contribute to the science in general.

  6. The video explain what is biotechnology, different meanings and application all based on a technology based on biology, biotechnology harnesses cellular and biomolecular processes to develop technologies and products that help improve our lives and the health of our planet.
We have used the biological processes of microorganisms to obtain many useful products, such as bread and cheese, and to preserve dairy products; thus the impact of the biotechnology is really big in different areas especially for food industry and, agriculture as was show in the video.
Modern biotechnology provides breakthrough products and technologies to combat debilitating and rare diseases, reduce our environmental footprint, feed the hungry, use less and cleaner energy, and have safer, cleaner and more efficient industrial manufacturing processes.
For me the biggest impact of biotechnology is the revolution that is causing in term of health because the world can use our own nature toolbox and using our own genetic makeup to heal and guide lines of research by: reducing rates of infectious disease, saving millions lives, tailoring treatments to individuals to minimize health risks and side effects and creating more precise tools for disease detection.

  7. Good evening classmates and teacher,

According to the video and my opinion, the most difficult situation about biotechnology is to make a convincing definition about it. In my experience, a lot of people in Costa Rica is not familiarized with the word, even my mother didn’t know nothing when I was starting my career. So, like a Biotechnology Engineer we need to fight with that reality and try to be clear about the importance and versatility of our profession. The video that we saw, is too specific in the biomedical area and transgenic cultures, but there aren´t the only biotechnological applications.

In Tecnologico de Costa Rica there are many projects with different approaches: Biomedicine, with skin cultures to regenerate burn victim´s skin; transgenic cultures, with genetically modified tobacco to produce insulin; Plant Tissue Cultures, with micropropagation of medicinal, agricultural and forest plants to extract bioactive compounds or to maintenance genebanks; synthetic biology, with bacteria transformation to produce biofuels from waste milk; there also another areas and tools like virology, molecular biology, nanotechnology.

That was my opinion about Biotechnological applications in TEC, I look forward to your comments.

  8. Hello classmates.

Video assigned by the teacher seems to me important because reports on applications of biotechnology, such as genetic engineering. Speaks about the use of genetically modified bacteria for the production of compounds of interest to humans, such as drugs. In this context, we talk about the use of biotechnology for the correction of genetic damage.

In the vegetable field, genetic engineering also mentioned as a useful tool for the production of crops of interest as it is cotton, where you can enter characteristics of interest include higher productivity, or resistance to environmental factors or disease.

Also speaking on environmental biotechnology, as an issue of great importance to the reduction of polluting compounds in the environment, using microorganisms.

  9. Hello Teacher and classmates
This video is very interesting and it shows some issues related to the biotech. In this video there are some explanations about biotech, like the possible use of biotechnologies in agriculture. Here were mentioned the possible ways of planting different crops, since chemical focus, organic focus and biotech focus. In the last one, it is saying that using tools given by modern biotechnology is feasible reach more efficient and with better nutritional facts crops.
In addition, some transgenic issues are mentioned. In the case of this type of technology there always were and will be a lot of controversy. It is well known that GMOs crops improve yield significantly, because is possible confer resistance to diseases and pests, salinity, low water availability, however, some people (environmentalists and conservationists) refuse them with no reasonable arguments, specifically technical arguments, that in fact there are not the real problem with transgenic organisms, the most important problem in this case is related to intellectual property because in this way some companies are privatizing knowledge that only wealthy users can get, for example, only rich farmers could use the technology of GMOs, because they can buy GMOs seeds, but a little farmer, without economic enough means couldn’t get this kind of seeds.
The video explain more issues related to the benefits and applications of biotechnology such as the production of insulin using bacteria, utilizing the technology of recombinant DNA or transgenic technology. Biotechnology is increasing and will be the most important science in future to supply a lot of medicines and even food, so it is important to keep investigation and improve continuosly.

  11. Hello
Well, this video talks about biotechnology and its applications, from a point of view of genetic engineering and how it is changing the human health and the environment.
Specified the modification of certain bacteria, use in preventive therapies in improving the level of agricultural production, the use of genetically modified organisms, which have advantages; disease resistance, tolerance to temperature changes or environments and improving the nutritional content of the product. But there are risks, so their approval is so hard because they make products for the population.
In my opinion, the video is very interesting, despite that this video gives a very general definition , where did not show me, the many great advantages that has one science and technology as it is biotechnology, an area with strong futuristic vision.
